Tree removal day in Pakenham, from the knock at 7.30am to the final walk
A standard backyard tree is a one day job. The crew arrives between 7.30am and 8.30am, the tree is on the ground before lunch, chipping and stump grinding run through the early afternoon, and we are gone by 2pm to 4pm. Expect 4 to 7 hours of on and off noise, a truck and chipper holding about 15 metres of kerb, and a tap for dust suppression. You need to move the cars, unlock the gate and keep the dog inside. Everything else is ours.

What stalls a job: an access gate narrower than we were told, a car nobody moved, a wasp nest in the trunk, an unmarked irrigation line, or a wind change. Any one of those adds 30 to 90 minutes.
Access, parking, power and water
Access. A 900mm side gate takes our walk behind stump grinder. Anything under about 800mm and every piece of the tree gets hand barrowed to the front, which typically adds one to two hours and $150 to $350 to the job. If your only route is through the house or over a fence, tell us at quote time so it is in the price rather than a surprise. On the newer estate blocks around Lakeside and Cardinia Lakes, the gap between the house and the boundary fence is often the deciding factor in how the whole day runs.
Parking. We need roughly 12 to 15 metres of kerb for the tipper and the chipper, ideally directly outside. On a court or a narrow estate street, put your bins out in the two spaces the night before to hold them. If we have to carry brush 40 metres from the tree to the chipper, that is time on your invoice.
Power and water. We are self-sufficient for power in almost every case, but we occasionally ask for a standard 10 amp outlet for a battery charger. We do need a garden tap: water knocks down the dust while the stump grinder is running and keeps it out of your neighbour’s pool. Toilet access is not expected, our crews plan for that.

Noise, dust, smell, pets and working from home
Noise
A chainsaw and a woodchipper are among the loudest tools that will ever run on your property. The chipper is the one the neighbours notice, and it runs in bursts of roughly 5 to 20 minutes as the brush comes down rather than continuously. Victoria’s residential noise rules restrict power tool use before 7am and after 8pm on weekdays, and before 9am on weekends and public holidays. We start on site around 7.30am to 8am and aim to have the loud work done by early afternoon. If someone in the house works nights, or a baby sleeps at a set time, tell us at booking and we will sequence the noisy stages around it rather than pretend it is not an issue.
Dust and smell
Stump grinding throws fine wood dust several metres. Close the windows on that side of the house, take the washing in and cover the pool if it is close. Freshly chipped eucalypt and pine smell strong for a day or two, and cypress, privet and camphor laurel hang around longer. Sap and fine debris will mark a car parked under the work, so move it to the street on the far side.
Pets, kids and working from home
The most common incident on our jobs is not a falling branch, it is a dog going through an open gate. Gates are open all day. Dogs and cats need to be inside the house or in a closed room from before we arrive, chickens shut in the run, and aviaries covered if they are within the dust zone. Children need to stay inside while ropes are in the tree, no exceptions, and the taped drop zone is not a viewing area.
If you work from home, book your calls for before 9am or after 3pm on the day, or plan to work somewhere else. Nobody sounds professional over a chipper. Wireless doorbells are also useless on the day, so give us a mobile number rather than expecting us to knock.

Steady rain is not a problem and we work through most of it. Three things do stop us. We will not climb or run an elevated work platform in sustained winds much above 40 km/h, because a swinging section is unpredictable and a gust at the wrong moment is how people get hurt. We stop entirely for lightning. And after a long wet stretch, the heavy grey clay across Pakenham holds water near the surface, so driving a grinder or a tipper across a saturated lawn will leave ruts and dead patches that cost more to repair than the delay costs to absorb.

Where the waste goes
Everything that comes off the tree has somewhere to be, and none of it is burnt. Brush and small limbs are chipped on site: that chip is clean, useful mulch and the cheapest garden material you will ever be offered, so say yes to a pile of it if you have beds to dress. What you do not want goes to a licensed green waste composting facility, charged by weight, which is exactly why keeping the heavy trunk on site saves you money. Hardwood trunk is cut into 400mm rounds for firewood, and if you do not want it we take it. Where a tree has come out because of a pest or disease problem, that material is kept separate and disposed of rather than spread around your garden as mulch.
