A stump left in the ground is more than an eyesore. In Pakenham’s warm, wet conditions a fresh stump becomes a feeding station for termites and a host for fungal decay, both of which you do not want sitting metres from your house. Stumps also resprout, especially the eucalypts, peppercorns and wattles, sending up suckers you keep mowing for years. And you cannot lay turf, pave a path, pour a slab or plant a new tree over a stump and a plate of roots. Grinding solves all of it in one visit.

A stump grinder is a wheeled machine with a spinning cutting wheel that chews the stump and the upper root structure into mulch, well below the surface. We then backfill the hole with the grindings and rake it level, leaving you a clean spot to finish however you like.

Most of the new estates around Pakenham, Cardinia Lakes, Lakeside, Arena, the Officer estates, are built on compact blocks with the backyard fenced off behind a side gate. A truck-mounted grinder is useless there. We run narrow-access machines that fit through a standard 750 to 900mm side gate, so we can reach a stump in the back corner of the yard without taking your fence down. We confirm gate width and access when we quote.

A worked example. After we removed a large peppercorn from an older block near the Pakenham town centre, the owner wanted to lay lawn over the spot. Grindings: keep them or cart them.

The default is to backfill the hole with the mulch the grinder produces, which settles over a few weeks, so add a little soil and turf on top. If you would prefer the grindings carted off and clean fill brought in, perhaps because you are paving or building over the spot, just say so and we will price it in.
