Tree lopping & pruning in Pakenham.

Pruning that keeps your tree healthy, safe and in shape, done to the Australian Standard AS 4373. Crown thinning, canopy lifting, dead-wooding, hedge work and power-line clearance, by qualified arborists who never top a tree to ugly, dangerous stubs.

Prune it right, or pay for it twice.

The single most common thing we fix in Pakenham is a tree that was topped. Someone came with a chainsaw, cut the canopy back to bare stubs, and left. A year later the gum has thrown up a dense thicket of weak, fast regrowth attached at the cut points by nothing more than a thin collar of new wood. Those shoots tear out in the next Cardinia westerly, the cut faces rot inward, and the tree becomes more dangerous than before it was touched. Topping also voids most home insurance if the tree later fails.

Real pruning is selective. We remove specific branches at the branch collar, at the right points, in the right amount, to the Australian Standard for the pruning of amenity trees, AS 4373. The tree seals the wounds cleanly, keeps its natural form, and stays structurally sound.

What we prune for.

  • Crown thinning: Selectively removing inner branches to let wind and light through. Reduces sail area and limb-failure risk on big Pakenham gums.
  • Dead-wooding: Removing dead and dying branches before they fall. Essential on mature eucalypts over a driveway, deck or kids’ play area.
  • Canopy lifting: Raising the lower branches for clearance over a roof, car, path or boundary on a tight estate block.
  • Reduction pruning: Bringing a tree’s height or spread back within bounds, correctly, where topping would be the lazy wrong answer.
  • Hedge and screen trees: Keeping a boundary row of pittosporum, photinia or cypress dense and tidy.
  • Formative pruning: Shaping a young tree early so it grows with good structure.

What pruning costs in Pakenham (2026).

A worked example. A 9-metre lemon-scented gum on a Cardinia Lakes block had three large dead limbs over the trampoline and a canopy crowding the roof. We dead-wooded it, thinned the crown by about 15 percent, and lifted the lower canopy off the gutter. Half a day’s work for a climber and ground crew, branches chipped, came to $980. Pricing guide:

  • Small ornamental prune: $150 to $400
  • Crown thin / canopy lift, medium tree: $400 to $1,200
  • Large mature eucalypt prune + dead-wood: $1,200 to $3,500
  • Hedge / screen row: typically per linear metre, quoted on site

Full rates on the pricing page. If a tree is too far gone to save, we move to full tree removal, and most owners pair it with stump grinding. For storm-snapped limbs that need attention now, see emergency tree work.

Power-line and overlay pruning.

Pruning a tree off a powered line on the older Pakenham, Nar Nar Goon or Officer streets is licensed line-clearance work, and we hold that licence. And if your block sits under a Vegetation Protection or Significant Landscape Overlay, even pruning can be regulated, so we check before we start. More on that in the Pakenham tree permit guide.
