Six places you can safely save money

Keep the wood: saves $150 to $400 on a medium tree, $400 to $900 on a large one. Green waste is charged by weight at the transfer station, and hardwood trunk is the heaviest part of any tree. Ask for the trunk cut into 400mm rounds and stacked where you want it. Season it 12 to 18 months, stacked off the ground and covered on top only.
Stage the work: fell now, grind the stump later. Stump grinding as a standalone visit runs $90 for a small stump to $700 for a big root flare. Splitting it into a second visit typically adds $80 to $150 in mobilisation, so the saving is real if the cash flow matters. Book the grind within six months before grass grows through it.
Do the prep yourself: saves $80 to $200. Move the trampoline, the pots, the outdoor setting and both cars, unlock the side gate, take off a fence panel if that is the access, and put the dog somewhere else. Half an hour of crew time is real money.

Five places where saving money gets paid for twice

An uninsured operator. Standard public liability cover in this trade is $10 million to $20 million. A dropped limb through a tile roof is a $15,000 to $60,000 repair and a tree into a neighbour's house is far more. If the contractor is uninsured, that bill lands on you, and your own insurer may decline it because you engaged an unqualified operator. Ask for the certificate of currency and check the expiry date on it.
Topping instead of removing or properly reducing. Cutting a healthy gum back to stubs costs $400 today. Within five years it carries a crown of weakly attached regrowth that is more dangerous than the original tree, and you pay to have the whole thing removed anyway. Removing a protected tree without a permit. If your block carries a Vegetation Protection, Environmental Significance or Significant Landscape Overlay, or sits in a rural or bushland zone, removal without a planning permit is an offence under Victoria's planning legislation and can attract enforcement action and an order to replant. DIY felling to save the labour. Chainsaw kickback, ladder falls and misjudged hinges are how homeowners end up in hospital, and a tree that lands on the neighbour's carport is not covered by anything. Cheapest quote with no clean-up line. If the price excludes green waste removal you will spend $300 to $700 on a skip or a hire trailer plus two days of your own weekend, which usually wipes out the saving and then some. If you are choosing that path, choose it deliberately as a budget tier, not by accident.

What a suspiciously low quote is usually leaving out

When a quote comes in 40 per cent under everyone else, it is almost never because that crew is more efficient. Work down this list and ask about each one in writing:

GST. A $900 price plus GST is $990, and some quotes are deliberately vague about it.
Green waste disposal, charged by the tonne at the transfer station, typically $80 to $180 a tonne.
The stump. Many cheap quotes are for the tree only, and the stump appears later as a $200 to $700 extra.
Public liability insurance and WorkCover for the crew, which is the biggest single line an uninsured operator saves.
Traffic management or a council road occupation where a crane, chipper or truck has to sit in the street.
Line clearance qualifications where the work is near a powered line.
Making good: raking, blowing paths, and repairing turf damaged by the machinery.
A second visit, quietly priced as a separate mobilisation once the crew is already on site.

Victorian rebates, concessions and free paths that change the maths

Straight answer first: there is no Victorian government rebate or subsidy for removing a tree on private property, and anyone implying otherwise is selling something. There are, however, four legitimate ways the cost can shift off your side of the ledger.

Street and nature strip trees belong to the council. Trees on the nature strip and in the road reserve are owned and maintained by Cardinia Shire Council. If a council tree is dropping limbs, blocking sight lines or lifting your footpath, log it with the council rather than paying a contractor. Removing or pruning a council tree yourself is not permitted.
Powerline clearance is the distributor's job. The electricity distributor for the Cardinia area is responsible for keeping clearance around its own lines and cuts back on a regular cycle at no cost to the property owner. The private overhead service line running from the street to your own point of attachment is generally the owner's responsibility, so that part can still land on you.
Storm damage may be an insurance matter. If a tree has come down onto an insured structure, most home policies will cover making safe and removing the fallen tree, often with a sub-limit on debris removal. Insurers do not usually pay to take down a standing tree, however dead it looks. Bushfire clearing exemptions on hills blocks. Victoria's bushfire protection exemptions, commonly called the 10/30 and 10/50 rules, allow certain vegetation clearing around an existing dwelling and along a boundary fence in designated bushfire prone areas without a planning permit. Then we come back in March and grind the stump for $220. Total cash $1,140, saving $710, and you have roughly 2 cubic metres of firewood that would cost $400 to $600 to buy seasoned.

That $710 is worth about two weekends of your time. For a lot of people in Pakenham that is a good trade and we are happy to quote it. For anyone with a bad back, a full calendar or a tree hanging over the pergola, the mid tier is cheaper once you count everything.

What we will not do cheaply
