Tree down in Pakenham: what to do in the first hour.

The first hour, in the order that matters

What makes the damage worse in the next 24 hours
Almost every avoidable dollar in a storm job is spent in the first day, and it is nearly always one of these four things.
- Water tracking along the ceiling battens. The hole is over the bedroom but the plaster comes down in the hallway. Get the water out low and early, and never let it pond above a sheet.
- Cutting under tension. A limb bent over a fence is a loaded spring. The cut end can travel two metres in a fraction of a second and the bar kicks straight back at chest height.

- Rake and stack loose twigs, bark and small litter clear of paths.
- Hand saw ground level branches under about 75mm thick that are lying flat and free.
- Tarp and bucket inside the house, and move contents out of the wet.
- Photograph everything and write down the date, the time and the weather.
- Shut the gas off at the meter and the water at the main if a pipe is hit.

After hours callout versus waiting until Monday
